Adult learning differs significantly from the learning approaches in our youth. Adults have a wealth of experience and confidence to bring into the classroom. The adult's learning style and the facilitator's teaching style must cater to executing skills and drawing from real-world experiences. Some characteristics that make adult learning different are the need for the teaching to be practical for immediate application, incorporating the student's unique experiences, providing opportunities for repetition, including relevant outcomes for student success, and engaging students interactively.
The key to lasting behavior change in adults is to focus on the application of the newly learned skills, and to provide ample opportunities to practice. In all 2Win workshops, whether Mastercalss or in-person, participants complete skill building exercises and then role-play their completed exercises to the facilitator and the other participants. The facilitator and other participants provide positive and constructive feedback to incorporate into their next application of the skill. Even if an adult participant does not role-play in front of the group, they still benefit from observing the feedback others receive and have opportunities to ask in-depth questions. Passive learning is very effective as an adult learning style, and adults can especially reference their real-world experiences when watching others. These role plays mimic real-life engagements, and when teams return to the field, they can accelerate deals immediately. This immediacy and reward of training are among the elements that help retain our curriculum.
